The people in this photo are (right: clockwise) are J.H., Alvina and Edith Johnson. J.H. and Alvina Johnson were my great great great grandparents, and Edith was my great great grandmother
2. When was the photograph taken?
The photo was taken in 1883. It’s the oldest family photo we can find.
3. What are your personal comments on the photo or what did you learn about the people in the photo from your family?
I learned that Alvina Johnson, born Alvina Kennedy, became a christian while sick in bed, and joined her husband’s church when she moved to Michigan. The more I learn about her, the more she reminds me of Judith Marie Gridley, the mother of my favorite musical artists, Maynard James Keenan. Like Judith Marie, Alvina was stricken with a long lasting illness that lead to her death, but never gave up faith in her god. Her daughter Edith went on to have four children, one of which was Merle Myers, later Retzloff, my mom’s grandmother.
